Neurodiversity-Affirming OT for Autistic NDIS Participants

At Healthroos, our occupational therapists specialise in supporting autistic NDIS participants across Greater Sydney — at home, at school, or in the community. Our approach is grounded in respect for each participant’s neurotype, sensory profile, and communication style.

We don’t try to change who our participants are. We support what they want to do — whether that’s managing daily routines with more ease, exploring sensory strategies that actually work, accessing assistive technology, or adapting home and school environments to reduce overwhelm.

We work alongside our Exercise Physiology for Autism service and physiotherapy team when participants benefit from a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.

What Our Autism-Focused OT Can Support

Sensory Regulation

Sensory profiles, strategies, and accommodations that respect sensory needs rather than suppress them. Tools and routines for home, school, and community.

Daily Living & Routines

Morning and evening routines, hygiene, cooking, transport, managing change — building predictability and independence around what matters to the participant.

School & Workplace

Reasonable adjustments, environmental modifications, executive function strategies, and OT input for IEPs, work transitions, or study supports.

Assistive Technology

AT assessments, prescriptions, and NDIS funding documentation — from low-tech sensory tools to AAC devices, ergonomic equipment, and home modifications.

Communication Support

Work alongside speech therapists (when involved) to embed AAC strategies, scaffolding, visual supports, and accommodations in daily environments.

Family & Carer Coaching

Practical strategies for families, education on neurodiversity-affirming approaches, and collaboration with other team members in the participant's life.

Our Approach

Participant-led, not outcome-imposed. We work towards the goals the participant and family actually want — not externally defined “normalisation” targets.

Sensory-first. Every session starts with respecting the participant’s sensory needs. Stimming is welcome. Breaks are built in. The environment adapts to the person, not the other way round.

Communication-respectful. Whether a participant is verbal, minimally speaking, non-speaking, uses AAC, or communicates through behaviour — we adapt our approach to their style.

Family as partners. Parents, carers, and supporters are the real experts on the participant. Our job is to collaborate, not override.

Complementary Services for Autistic Participants

OT works best alongside other disciplines. We also offer:

Exercise Physiology for Autism

Individualised movement programming for motor coordination, sensory regulation, and community participation — built around the participant’s interests and neurotype.

NDIS Physiotherapy

For autistic participants with co-occurring physical conditions, injuries, or mobility goals. Full mobile service across Greater Sydney.

Functional Capacity Assessment

Comprehensive FCAs for NDIS plan reviews, evidence-building for plan changes, and SDA applications. Autism-sensitive assessment process.

Yes. We work with autistic participants of all ages — children, adolescents, and adults — adapting our approach to each participant’s goals and life stage.

We don’t use compliance-based methods. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming — we respect stimming, sensory needs, and preferred communication styles. Progress is measured against the participant’s own goals, not conformity targets.

We respond to all new referrals within 4 business hours. Initial assessments are typically booked within 1–2 weeks of referral, depending on suburb. Reports delivered within 2 weeks after first consult.
